Warm welcome to all art lovers! I hope you enjoy my portfolio of paintings - any feedback would be much appreciated. Below is a little more about me.. cheers,
Alena Smith draws her inspiration from the Australian landscape, often natural surroundings of rocks and rockpools. To her, they represent layers of history, of weathering and passing of time. Rocks are often serene and peaceful, yet have a powerful, strong presence.
Alena likes to use these subjects to explore her interest in void vs solid, line vs bulk, positive vs negative. The space in between, or negative space is just as important to portray as positive identifiable objects. Alena is interested in this push-pull relationship and hopes to render these concepts through her abstract art.
In the case of “Rockscapes”, each subject reveals its origin, through colour, and composition. Each rock represents the DNA of place, a topic central to many Australian landscape artists. Each artwork depicts a positive and negative. The solid “form” competes with the void of space. One is overlaid with the other, until the final composition emerges- a snapshot of a lengthy process of observation and sensitivity to the landscape.
Alena has studied painting and etching part time at the National Art School in Sydney, and has work in private collections in Australia and the UK. She has exhibited at Lennox Street Studios annual exhibitions and Global Gallery in Paddington, Sydney
